As the school year comes to an end, Downey Seniors are waiting in anticipation for the end of their high school careers. Around this time is when our principal assembles the graduating class in order to give them information about their seniors activities as well as a final warning. The Don’t Be Dumb Assembly, or as many seniors have dubbed it, the Don’t Be Stupid Assembly, where the class is given a warning about anything that could potentially disturb their last few weeks of being a high schooler.
Starting in the infamous countdown to seniors’ last day of school, May 28th, is the official last day, meaning as of April 19th, there are only 26 more school days for the senior class. Some important dates and events that were discussed during this assembly include prom, college luncheon, senior awards, the week of graduation, and graduation itself.
Prom will be on Friday, May 17th, at Artic Anaheim from 7:00pm to 11:00pm, with the theme being starlight symphony. Prom ticket sales are currently going on and will be going on until May 3rd or when they sell out, whichever comes out first. Some important details discussed were reminders that free parking is limited and not to bring anything that might have the potion to get confiscated with the risk of not getting it back at all. Guest ticket sales start on Monday, April 22nd, and are only available at the bookkeeper’s window.
The college luncheon and senior awards are both going to be held on May 22nd. The luncheon will be during school hours where those attending a four year college will be able to have lunch provided to them and see who else is going to their college or surrounding ones. Senior awards will be after school and only for those invited, where those who have won a scholarship will be recognized for this accomplishment.
One of the main issues discussed was the matter of a senior ditch day. Because of the events of the graduating class who planned two days to ditch, Mr. Houts made certain to warn those who tried to plan a class wide day before prom. Prom being on a Friday, he goes on to say so long as everyone’s guardians and parents were aware and excused their absences, there would be no issues.
However, when an unnamed student accidentally caused an uproar during the assembly when the floor was open to questions, she relieved the ‘real’ day seniors had been attempting to ditch for senior ditch day. The surrounding crowd of seniors booed the person in question. It was certainly an eventful few minutes before the end of the assembly.
Finally, the week of graduation and the ceremony itself. Seniors last day is set to be Tuesday may 28th, the last day they will be required to attempt classes before graduation. During the week leading up to graduation seniors can expect to take one final walk around Downey in their caps and gowns, take a class picture on the stage in their gowns, practice for graduation in the school’s football field, and attend their senior sunset. All this leading up to graduation on May 31st.
With this assembly not only being held to relay important information to the senior class but as a final warning to make sure they ended the school year correctly, it was another reminder how quickly the end of this chapter of life is coming. If there are any more questions, seniors are being expected to keep track of their emails for the senior timeline or ask any administrators that could help answer any of their inquiries.
