This month on Thursday, March 7th and Friday, March 8th, Downey High School’s theater department held their 4th annual one-act festival. This also marks the first year where all the works performed were completely original student-made productions. Everything is student-run, every detail put together by them. There were three, approximately 45-minute plays performed. Alexander the Great, a historical comedy about Alexander the Great written by Javier Miranda, Afire for You by Yaretzi Hernandez which is a romantic drama, and Say Goodbye Mr. Kats a western drama by Micah Rodriguez.
Senior Angel Gutierrez shares his thoughts on the performances. “Watching the One Acts was an amazing experience as there were three acts written entirely by Downey High School students. Seeing people I know on stage performing their hearts out really was a sight to behold as all their commitment is shown via their acting, scripting, tech, etc. Truly a show one will never forget.”
“I thought that each one act was very entertaining in their own distinct ways.” Senior Steve Fregoso says when asked about the festival. “I really enjoyed all the aspects from the humor, passion, and conflict all shown within each show, and how the actors worked really well in pulling out each story.”
“It was truly entertaining and kept me captivated the whole time. I found it so amazing that the performances were all entirely student-run and made. You can tell just how much attention to detail there was and how hard the students worked to perfect their works.” Cristina Zaldivar, senior, states.
There is a lot of work put into putting on plays like these, from the directors to the actors, and the work behind the scenes from lights and tech. Every student involved put in their time and effort to make it possible to put these performances together and it is safe to say that their work truly did pay off.
