The annual Earth Day Eco Club Fair kicked off on Wednesday, April 19, with a variety of sustainable activities, information booths and organizations to advocate for the care of our environment. Ranging from upcycling old T-shirts into tote bags to rosemary bundles to advocate self-sufficiency. Downey High School students host this eco-friendly event at the round-a-bout!

At one of the many after school meetings for the Eco Club, Marie Olmedo, 12, takes over the presentation and expresses her feelings towards the tragic events going on right now related to environmental issues. “I like to get myself involved with the activities that can help the environment” said Olmedo “For example attending beach clean ups monthly.”

Spreading awareness around Downey High on the importance of maintaining our environment, Catherine Quinones, treasurer of the Eco Club,10 joined the club in hopes of being a wake up call to all her peers on how to help make the world a better place. “As a club we wanted to bring awareness to topics one could easily ignore,” Quinones said. “While at the same time have fun in doing so. By engaging these little projects it not only brought enjoyment to others but highlighted what remains behind closed doors.”

In the last months left of the year, Janet Renteria, 11, brought up the idea to C-104’s weekly meetings to make all natural lotions, chap sticks, and body scrubs with the help of Eco Club adviser Mrs. Santacruz. “I’ve always like to make new creation with fruits and oils,” Renteria said, “so why not make products lots of people can wear.”
