With a fervor for cooking, Rita Magana, 12, hopes to develop her skills as a cook and follow in her brother’s footsteps.  ”If I work hard, my passion will show through my work and I will excel beyond my expectations,” Magana said.

Power for Periods, the club behind the Bloody Valentine drive, includes a handful of students and English teacher, Ms. Simpson. The club came into fruition in late 2017 and began to fundraise for women in need of health care products during their menstrual cycle.

Every Winter Formal, it is tradition for the Formal King and Queen to dance to a slow song together; this year, Formal Queen Valeria Corral, 12, decided her and the formal king would walk off and dance with their original dates. “Instead of finishing our dance I came up with an idea,” Corral said. “We would branch off and dance with our own dates.”

Downey High School student Leila Garcia, 12, has never attended any of the high school dances but makes the decision to attend Winter Formal her last year of high school. “I decided to go because it’s senior year,” Garcia said. “I enjoyed the music and seeing the variety of dresses.”

With her brother, Josh Tafolla, 11, and best friend Destiny Mora, 12, by her side to help her with Mas Vintage, Samantha Tafolla ,11, establishes her store at the age of sixteen. “She’s [destiny] been with me since day one,” Tafolla said. “Ever since I told her, she has supported me and has helped me get through it all.”

Mexico’s traditional holiday known as Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is known as a celebration of loved ones who are now resting in paradise. Families lay out their loved ones favorite snacks over their graves so that on Oct 31 through Nov 2, they come back and enjoy their favorite meals before laying to rest once again.

Mrs. Cuba encourages students to donate toys for hospitalized children from ages three to eight. The toy drive started with one toy in her fourth period and has now become a box full with stuffed animals, toy cars, and dolls.
