With a natural eye for photography, Andrew Vega, 12, is excited to showcase his skills through the Downey Legend. “I joined newspaper because Napoli recommended me,” Vega said. “I was in photojournalism I love photography and getting out there.”

Hugo Guerrero, 12, plans on joining the army after high school because of the opportunities that they give and the honor of serving his freedom. “I joined the army because of the benefits they have to offer and because its an opportunity to achieve many of my goals,” Guerrero said. “ I also think it would be an honor to serve for my country.”

Senior Jeffrey Tran plans to enter the army after high school. “When my parents had their lives devastated in a war-torn country [Korea], America opened its doors to them.” Tran said. “I am joining the army as a way to repay the country for all it has done for helping my family rebuild their lives.”

Downey High School’s baseball team participated in the annual Dodgeball tournament on March 29, Noah Ortega, 12, gives his insights. “I had lots of fun, especially since I was getting a couple of guys out on my own and I was always one of the last players standing.” Ortega said. “There were some bad calls but I had fun.”

On March 29th, Downey High School held their annual Dodgeball Tournament where senior Damian Menendez helped and hyped his team to victory. “I’m just happy we won man, “Mendez said. “We all did our best and we were victorious!”

After winning a match for his team, Andrick Valdez, 10, was rushed after winning as an underdog and was greeted with cheers from all teams during Downey High School’s Dodgeball Tournament. “ [After winning] I let out a victory scream while the crowd was also screaming and before I knew it people started crowding me and picking me up,” Valdez said. “I almost passed out but didn’t. My team was proud and so was I and even tho we lost the tournament, we didn’t come in last. I am proud to be a member of team Quacktape!”

Being the last man standing, Andrick Valdez, 10, took his team to victory at Downey High Schools Dodgeball tournament. “ It was pretty intense if you ask me. Almost all of my teammates were out of the game but me. I couldn’t afford to lose no matter what.” Valdez said. “ With the energy left in me, I went all out ferociously as if I was Kratos using his Spartan Rage. When I threw the ball, my opponent couldn’t catch it in time, leading us to victory!”

For AP Psychology's 3rd quarter project, Ivy Solana, 12, created her bottle baby son, Cornelius the 3rd, in order to get herself a good grade. “I had a lot of fun making this baby,” Solana said. “I also think this project helped me learn and memorize more about psychological development a lot more as well.”

The AP Psychology program had a project where students, such as Valeria Gomez, 12, must create a baby out of a 2-liter bottle and use it to create a baby album correlating with child development and tells about her favorite moment with this project. “ A few days before the project was due I jokingly said, “let’s rip off the head of my doll and just put it on our bottle",” Gomez said. “ It ended up being really creepy but also ended up being a really nice looking baby bottle.”

For an AP Psychology project at Downey High School, Jeff Lucena, 12, creates a bottle baby named Shrek and gives insight on parenting. “ Parenting isn't always what it seems,” Lucena said. “You’ll never knows what you're going to get, so just be thankful that you're giving someone else a chance.”

At the Walk for Water event on Feb. 9, Natalie Lopez, 11, brings her friends to help raise money for the installation of wells in African villages. “I think it's unfair and we must do our part as a society to make a change,” Lopez said. “I brought my friends and sister because this is a great cause and needs all the help they [Walk for Water] can get.”

A blue Hollister winter coat was given to Eddie Amato, 12, from Tristan Yepez, 12, because Yepez was challenged to prank someone on Halloween to earn the brands gear. “They threw a pie to my face and then pushed me into Tristan’s pool.” Amato said. “It was super freezing man, but, hey, this coat is warm and [very] stylish.”

Downey High School hosts its annual Fall Blood drive on September 27 where Kirsten Rodriguez, 12, has donated a pint of blood. “I feel that the blood drive is really important cause it helps those who need it,” Rodriguez said. “I’m hoping my blood goes to someone in need.”
