Downey vs. Warren Girls Volleyball

Taking the match 3-1 girls volleyball beat Warren 26-24 during Warren’s Dig Pink game on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

“I couldn’t have done it without my team,” Janice Yi, 12, said. “We were losing by 24-22 and we needed one point to win. But then we brought it back with the help of Sarah Shaddox one of the outsides, who served it and aced. This brought back the points, making us win.”

Downey will host Warren in the annual Dig Pink game at home on Thursday, Oct 19. They played against Gahr on Thursday, Oct 5 and won 25-0. The girls also beat Paramount 30-28 on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Dominguez lost to the Lady Vikes 25-10 on the Vikings turf Thursday, Oct.12.

Football

Paramount Pirates beat the Vikings 21-20 at Allen Layne Stadium on Friday, Oct. 6.  The stats for the game are as followed for the Vikings:

Receiving Yards Per Game: 194

Rushing Yards Per Game: 270.3

Tackles Per Game: 74.7

Sacks: 19

Interceptions: 10

Varsity will played Dominguez at Compton College on Thursday, Oct. 12  and won 62-14.

JV football also played Paramount Oct. 5 and lost 4-1. On Thursday, Oct. 12 at home against Carnegie, the Vikings lost 21-14.

Freshman football lost to the Pirates 20-12 on Thursday, Oct 5 at their home field Score: 20-12. Jacob Skobis replaced running back Jarod Gutierrez after Gutierrez injured his leg first quarter.

“We came out in the second half and moved the ball up and down the field,” Coach Weisenberger said, “but we couldn’t put the ball in the end zone to score a touchdown.”

At home against Dominguez on Thursday, Oct. 12, the Vikings lost 36-12.

The Vikings had a bi week on Sept 29, meaning none of the football teams played.

 

Golf

There was no match against Dominguez on Monday, Oct. 2, due to Dominguez not having a team this year. Downey played Santa Fe on Thursday, Oct. 5 and lost by 43 strokes.

“All of our players struggled that match,” Coach Bean said. “We are working to improve our scores this week and get better results against Gahr and Warren.”

Gahr defeated Downey on Tuesday, Oct. 10. On Thursday, Oct. 12 girls golf will play Warren at Rio Hondo Golf Course. Tuesday, Oct. 17 marks the beginning of the San Gabriel Valley Preliminary Tournament at Los Amigos Golf Course.  The SGVL finals will be held the following day at the Rio Hondo Golf Course.

 

Tennis

Girls varsity tennis played away against Lynwood on Tuesday, Oct. 3 and lost 12-6. Doubles player Ashley Beltran snapped her strings during her double match and still manages to win her match.  Leila Haiter, 12,  won all of the matches she played.  Claire Mutia, 12,  and Cathy Yun, 12, won 2 out of 3 of their games. Downey defeated Warren 12-6 on Thursday, Oct. 5 at home.  Oct. 6 Gahr lost on the Vikes home turf. Downey took another win against Paramount, 12-6, on Tuesday, Oct. 10 away. Their next game is Friday, Oct. 13 against Lynwood at home.

 

Waterpolo

Downey played Montebello at home on Thursday, Sept. 28.  The final score was 25-10, a loss for the Vikings. Cerritos defeated Downey 17-6 at home on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Downey versed Pacifica at home and lost 10-8 on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

“ I am extremely proud of the boys today. We played our best waterpolo of the year,” Coach Villa said. “Our two seniors [Bryan Repreza and Jerry Aguinada ] really clicked and showed moments of brilliance together. They connected for 7 out of our 8 goals. The rest of the guys stepped up on our team’s defence. We had lots of steals and field blocks. Our goalie [Adrian Buenrostro] finished with 12 saves. Pacifica is ranked number one in our division so we proved to ourselves that we belong with the best.”

There is no game on Thursday, Oct. 12, however the boys will be competing in the Nogales Tournament Friday, Oct. 13 through Saturday, Oct. 14. The following week on Tuesday, Oct. 17, Warren will host Downey at 3:15.

 

X-Country

Cross country had their second cluster meet on Thursday, Oct.12 at Cerritos Regional Park. Their next meet is the San Gabriel Valley League Finals at La Mirada Regional Park on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
