The stands filled with enthusiastic fans at the Downey vs. Warren track meet on, April 14, at the Allen Layne stadium where both varsity boys and girls took the lead. The final score resulted as 79-58 (boys) and 68-67 (girls), making Downey victorious against their rivals, Warren.
“I ran in the 4 by 1 and the 100,” junior Jasmine Johnson said. “Downey took first and second in both of the races. I’m very proud of my girls because they really gave it all they got out there today.”
Boy’s varsity was also declared San Gabriel Valley League Champions after clobbering their final opponent.
“I took third place in the one hundred, first place in long jump, first place in triple jump, and second in the 4 by 1, senior Clarance Wallace said. “I’m really happy that my boys would always motivate me to do better so we can beat Warren.”
A few students who stood out above the rest were Kristin Johnson, Brittany Householder, Steven Bovey, Austin Ferrini, and Maria Hernandez, for their placements throughout the track meet.
“Today I participated in long jump, triple jump, high jump and the 4 by 4,” sophomore Jocelyn Orozco said. “I got second place in long jump and triple jump. I’m extremely proud of my team, but I’m also proud of myself for beating my personal record on the 4 by 4.”
As the Vikes crossed the final finish line in the final race, the fans rose to their feet in astonishment to see the winners. It was a close nerve wrecking race, but in the end, Downey came out on top.
