The varsity boy’s water polo team defeated warren with a score of 10 to 9 at the Downey Aquatics center on November 1. Though the boys were down during most of the game, they managed to come out victorious.
The Vikings had to struggle for a win during the 1st quarter as the Bears had numerous goals and the defensive tactics by the Warren goalie kept the ball in constant play.
“It was tough,” Varsity player Danny Montoro said. “I noticed a lot of my teammates tried to shoot but no luck.”
During the first quarter the Boys were left with a struggle to make a goal on warren. The team anticipated every shot, striking the goals net but not making it in.
Finally , 20 minutes into the game Derek Klotzer scored on the Bears taking them to a 1-4 stand.
“We were just ready to take over the game and beat the bears.” Keith Rodriguez said.
By half time the boys were at 5-5, and battled to maintain the lead over Warren.
Throughout the game, the Vikes and the bears were in constant battle for a win. Warren gained the lead but soon after the Vikes would take control of the scoreboard once again.
“I didn’t know what to expect, I saw warren in the lead then I saw Downey in the lead and I was afraid Warren would win.” Sophomore Carlos Valenzuela said.
With overtime , Derek Klotzer passes a dry ball right into the goal taking the team to the final score of 10-9
The Varsity Water polo team ended their season with a 21-5 record and placed in 2nd place in the San Gabriel Valley League and now prepares for the upcoming CIF championships.
