On Thursday, March 18, the Girls’ Track and Field team traveled to Cerritos to battle against the Gahr Gladiators for their first league meet of the season. The girls won their first meet against the Gladiators and dominated the track by placing first in multiple events.
The best performance of the day was Christina Matthews, who placed first in the 200-meter dash. Matthews crossed the finish at a time of 26.52 seconds and blew away her competition.
“I run with a travel team on the weekends and a few days during the week to increase my speed,” Matthews said.
The girl’s 400-meter relay team placed first with a time of 52.12 seconds. The team consisted of senior captain’s Christina Matthews, Kameya Johnson, Annalise Weisenburger, and junior Brittany Householder. They defeated the Gladiators by a full 10 meters.
“We use our practice time wisely to perfect our handoffs,” Householder said.
Another first place winner was senior Johanna Umana, who placed first in the 100-meter high hurles, who crossed the finish line at 17.99 seconds.
“I have trained hard to be where I am both physically and mentally and I continue to get better,” Umana said.
The girls are undefeated in league after their first league meet against the Gladiators and they continue to strive for a league championship.
