On Friday, March 12, the Boys’ Track and Field team traveled to Irvine High School for an invitational. The top two boys in each event were invited to attend this meet. Among all the athletes there, many of the runners, throwers, and jumpers showed true talent.
Juniors Stephen Bovey and Anthony Ferrini both placed in the 300 hurdles. Bovey placed first and Ferrini placed second.
“We are very competitive against each other because we both want to take first place,” Ferrini said. “I’m alright with second place because it gives our team point.”
Other performances included the 400-meter relay team, who set a new personal record this season with a time of 45.16 seconds. This team included junior Dave Smith who started off then handed off the baton to the second leg, senior Joe Hill, who then handed the baton off to junior Anthony Ferrini and finished with a handoff to anchor Kyle Lewis.
“Perfect handoffs is the key to the 4X100 relay and we perfect our handoffs with practice,” Lewis said.
The best overall performance was from senior captain Steven Williams who broke his personal record in high jump. Williams soared over 6 feet 8 inches and stopped at the height of 6 feet 10 inches. Athletes don’t expect to peak until early May, but Williams has worked hard to go beyond his expected capabilities.
“I have put in the extra time and effort in the off season to get where I am,” Williams said.
Although the Irvine meet was early in the season. Athletes have broken personal records and will continue to do so with hard work and dedication.
