The Boys Varsity Wrestling team has had a successful start since the beginning, from their tournaments to their first league match against Gaur on Jan.7.
Boys Varsity Wrestling started off with motivation and is working hard to make CIF. The team has won first place in all their tournaments and has nine returning players coming on the team. Their coaches have pushed them hard since day one and the sacrificing diets have paid off for these wrestlers.
“He makes us work out hard during practice and helps us get stronger mentally, he’s very encouraging,” Brandon McDonald said.
Varsity and Junior Varsity Wrestling Coach Soto is a former wrestler himself and knows how it feels to be under this kind of pressure. The unique workouts that he makes his wrestlers complete will make them lose many pounds in one day which helps them maintain their weight category. As a coach and friend Soto helps push his players all the way to the end.
“We’ll definitely make CIF this year, the lineup is phenomenal and we have a new experienced coach, Monico Enriquez, that has been giving a lot of effort to make us a better team,” David Andrade said.
This year, a new coach and former wrestler Monico Enriquez has been a lot of help to the varsity and JV wrestlers. From his influences to his encouragements Enriquez has helped the wrestlers stay mentally motivated with a never give up attitude throughout the match.
With valuable wrestlers this season, Brandon McDonald has all in total of 21 pins taking lead of the whole team. Not falling behind, Ivan Garibay is taking lead of 33 near falls for the beginning of the season. Many other wrestlers have been starting off great according to their weight class. In the 112’s weight class David Andrade has been showing what he does best. Also, Jacob Barbina in the 125’s and Aaron Esquer in the 145 are showing the best performance this season.
“The goal for the team this season is to get as many state qualifiers,” Kenneth Lee said.
This year the Varsity Wrestling has been working harder than last year. Placing second last year gives them motivation to do better. They ask themselves ‘Where do you see yourself in this team?’ and their answers are shown on how well they do in their matches. It is a long way from now to CIF but these guys have a lot of determination and potential towards making it to the end and calling themselves CIF Champions.
