Optimism and work ethic were key elements in the success of the Girl’s Tennis team helping them qualify for the play-offs. Their attempts to C.I.F. victory unfortunately fell short, losing to St. Bonaventure 8-0 after winning league.
For Katie Medina it was her first C.I.F. game and she played with heart, especially since it was her first year ever playing tennis.
“I’m very excited and nervous about how far we’ve gone this season,” Medina said.
She and her doubles partner, Janette Rico, won all three rounds. They achieved two bagels and a French fry, winning 6-0 and 6-1. Medina and Rico have made it to the C.I.F. Section Toyota 2009 girls Individuals Tennis Regional.
Not only were the Vikings impressed by the team’s hard work and dedication, but also Coach Reutinger of St. Bonaventure had encouraging words for Downey’s tennis team.
“You know you can tell by the coach what kind of team you are going to play, and these girls are the most well-behaved opponent we’ve had all season,” Reutinger said.
“All we can do keep our heads up and look forward in doing better next year,” coach Diego said.
