The night many students had yearned for had come, as girls and boys rushed home after school to put last minute touches on their perfect outfits, for the 2011 Winter Formal Arabian Night, held at Knott’s Berry Farm’s Boardwalk Ballroom, on Jan. 27. The hall was transformed with stunning décor and a radiant disco ball in the center of the dance floor, which was specifically entitled for Downey High School students.
“My Winter Formal experience was overall fantastic,” junior Melissa Barajas said. “What I really like was how everyone got all glammed up, screamed their lungs out, and how the park was just for us Downey kids. It made that special night a bit more special.”
Students were also able to ride a few of the roller coasters that the theme park selected for this event. Xcelerator, Boomerang, and Supreme Scream had dozens of boys in tuxedos and girls in elegant dresses waiting in line to ride these thrilling attractions.
The DJ played popular songs all night that kept the students on the dance floor. Soon enough, it was time for the Winter Formal court to approach the stage and announce the king and queen that teachers elected. Amanda Doss, Jannette Gonzalez, Katie Medina, Janette Rico, Isaac Dan, Ivan Garibaldo, Steve Pascual, and Brandon Pineda stepped onto the stage not knowing what the outcome would be.
“An ASB student came up to me and told me the news when I found out I was in the Winter Formal court,” Winter Formal King Isaac Dan said, “I felt overwhelmed and excited because I wasn’t expecting it at all.”
The announcer then spoke the names into the microphone; Isaac Dan and Janette Rico were then crowned king and queen and set off to dance floor for their spotlight dance as Winter Formal royalty.
“I was excited and honored that I had been nominated for the court, so I wasn’t nervous finding out if I had won,” Winter Formal Queen Janette Rico said. “I was anxious more than anything because just being on stage in front of all my peers was an extraordinary feeling and, I would not have minded if any other princesses had won queen.”
The clock stroked twelve and the night came to an end. The attendees of Winter Formal, inquired a successful, memorable, and Arabia night.
