Downey’s annual tree lighting ceremony took place on Mon., Dec. 9 at the Downey Civic Center. The event was sponsored by the Downey Lions Club, a non-profit service club that has served the needs of the community for four years.
The gathering was in full swing at six thirty when the Christmas tree lights were switched on. Parents and children gathered around, enjoyed the lights and waited in lines to sit with Santa and play in the snow. Guests were also able to enjoy the sounds of classic Christmas music, complimentary hot chocolate and candy canes.
Lenore Perri, the club’s president, guarantees that 100% of the fundraiser proceeds go right back into the community. Perri, whose favorite holiday is Christmas, does not wait for the holidays to give back. She and the rest of the Lions Club are currently organizing a toy give away.
“My favorite part of the holidays is giving back to the kids,” Perri said.
Her personal New Year’s resolution is to find out what the needs of the community are and serve them. Perri and the club particularly work towards helping families that can not afford eye glasses.
She wasn’t the only one with holiday spirit. Sonya Meacham, the recreation manager, enjoyed watching all the families and Christmas cheer.
Meacham enjoyed the festive celebrating that went on and thought it was a nice way to unite the community.
“I think it’s a great event,” Meacham said. “It’s a great way to see the community come together.”
In the snow, was where Gigi Saab, the wife of councilman Alex Saab stood. Saab was patiently waiting in line with her son and the rest of her family to enjoy their turn.
“It was really fun and a great experience,” Saab said. “Watching my son have a good time is really nice.”
After playing in the snow, nothing was left but to enjoy the holiday spirit.
