Sarah Pastora, Videographer
Sarah Pastora is a first-year senior videographer who is a kind and witty person. She joined the Downey Legend to create content and in hopes of becoming a journalist in the future. After high school, Pastora’s goal is to go to UC Irvine because of its strong writing programs, which is another one of Pastora’s hobbies. Pastora has won the Spooky Story writing contest twice consecutively: a second and first-place win. Other than writing, Pastora likes to sew and has even solved the Rubix cube. She is also a writing center tutor and enjoys helping fellow students improve their writing.“I like writing because I think it’s so fun and beautiful to put words together to create a painting of images to tell a story and help others envision things they haven’t seen before,” Pastora stated. Writing is what makes Pastora’s vision in videography impactful.
Zachary Pepaj, Writer
As a first-timer in the newspaper team, Zachary Pepaj, 11, joins the team of newspaper writers 2024-2025. Pepaj enjoys playing rhythm and FPS (first-person shooter) games in their free time, but they also enjoy buying merch from their favorite bands. Pepaj's goals for this school year are to join the eco-club and get all their necessary academics done in preparation for next year’s college applications. Pepaj is also interested in theater and English, they’re in drama class here at Downey High School and hope to have a career in the English field.
“In this class, I'm looking forward to making the website more interactive by collaborating with people in other roles”, shares Pepaj. “So that I can make the website more user-based”. Pepaj cares about the readers and users of The Downey Legend and is looking forward to making things more user-friendly.
Arissa Nava, Illustrator
As she enters her senior year at Downey High, Arissa Nava enters The Downey Legend as a first year illustrator. As a shy yet friendly and humorous individual, Nava first became interested in newspaper after seeing the articles posted online and from a growing interest in documenting school events and the community around her. After highschool she plans to enjoy her summer by attending music festivals and raves. As well as traveling to some place new like Europe, more specifically Paris. In the fall she plans to start college and pursue a career in nursing, in hopes of later transferring to a UC, with UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara as her top choices.
“What I am most excited about doing here in newspaper this year is learning how to create a comic book,” Nava states. “I want to create something based off my creativity and inspirations and learn how to put it all together.”
Laila Barrera, Social Media
Laila Barrera is an adventurous, ambitious, and social person who is wonderful to be around. Her personality is as warm as her hobby: baking, which has inspired her to pursue business to one day open her own cafe. This aspiration is why she has contributed to programs such as becoming the treasurer of the Written Wishes org. and taking the business position in Newspaper: “I joined newspaper so I can get more knowledge in the business world in a bigger environment.” - Laila Barrera
After hopefully graduating with honors in high school, Barrera plans to attend Cal State University of Long Beach to follow through with her business degree because the campus offers great programs for both business and her backup plan, education.
