The Link Lounge had its grand re-opening on September 5th! The biggest student organization is back again for another year. Freshies have only gotten a glimpse of what Link Crew has to offer. Starting from freshman orientation, the very first impression students get from Downey High to the last day of school, Link Crew has always been there for you and beyond. The Link Lounge is a space for anybody to come and do their homework. It’s a way for students to do their homework so they can get the best grades. Quite literally, the sign at the entrance right at the door says, “Welcome please come in!” and the various signs on the walls saying,” Anyone is welcome in this classroom,” or the one that says, “Treat people with kindness,”
Link Lounge does its job of not only welcoming students in but also having a comforting vibe. Located in J building, J4, the room looks out at the various green scenery right next to the door with its giant windows and high ceilings. Not only do you get this peaceful view when doing homework or what you have to do, but you also get to listen to music in the background. One thing about J4 is that it is always active. Link Leaders wake up bright and early when the sun is rising to help out anybody, while some stay behind after school and keep the fort down. When walking into J building, not only is the link crew here, but so are the various art designs and art creations created by students, so you also get greeted by the art of Downey!
Advisors Ms. Moreno and Ms. Ruvalcaba have words of wisdom about Link Lounge and anyone interested. When asked what makes Link Crew so great, Ms.Moreno stated the following: “Peer interactions, come meet new people to make positive experiences. Meet new people who you don’t talk to on the normal.”
Ms. Ruvalcaba has a few words for anyone who might need it. “Come feel supported in school, feel safe, build a community. Don’t feel nervous, everyone is welcome.” These two awesome teachers are the advisors and help out anyone!
Link leader Alyssa Portillo, 11, has a few words for freshies who might need another reason to come by. “Link crew is a great place for freshmen to get guidance on the twists and turns of high school.” Portillo states.
“Helping you make great friends along the way.” Link leader Mariana Lopez, 11, has some words of advice. “What I think freshmen would like about Link crew is the sense of community. We all band together to get things done and that’s what makes us so successful. What I enjoy most about Link crew is the connection we make with the freshmen, “ Lopez stated. “ I love being able to help them through this really important chapter in their lives.”
Link Lounge is a community, a way to get guidance for high school when you need it, link crew is here to help. Come meet awesome teachers, inspiring leaders, and new friends. P.S. Link Lounge has two couches, one in the very front and one in the back, so do with that information at your will. Freshmen or anyone who needs it, come by J4, make memories, do your homework, and have the best time!
