About the Contributors
Laila Barrera, Social Media
Laila Barrera is an adventurous, ambitious, and social person who is wonderful to be around. Her personality is as warm as her hobby: baking, which has inspired her to pursue business to one day open her own cafe. This aspiration is why she has contributed to programs such as becoming the treasurer of the Written Wishes org. and taking the business position in Newspaper: “I joined newspaper so I can get more knowledge in the business world in a bigger environment.” - Laila Barrera
After hopefully graduating with honors in high school, Barrera plans to attend Cal State University of Long Beach to follow through with her business degree because the campus offers great programs for both business and her backup plan, education.
Arissa Nava, Illustrator
As she enters her senior year at Downey High, Arissa Nava enters The Downey Legend as a first year illustrator. As a shy yet friendly and humorous individual, Nava first became interested in newspaper after seeing the articles posted online and from a growing interest in documenting school events and the community around her. After highschool she plans to enjoy her summer by attending music festivals and raves. As well as traveling to some place new like Europe, more specifically Paris. In the fall she plans to start college and pursue a career in nursing, in hopes of later transferring to a UC, with UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara as her top choices.
“What I am most excited about doing here in newspaper this year is learning how to create a comic book,” Nava states. “I want to create something based off my creativity and inspirations and learn how to put it all together.”
Viviana Alba, Co-Photo Editor
As the Co-Photo editor of The Downey Legend, Viviana Alba, 12, has returned to the staff for her third and last year. Alba’s passion for photography goes beyond the classroom as she plans to continue photography as a side job. However, photography is not her only passion. After high school, Alba hopes to pursue a career in veterinary medicine to follow her love for animals. As an introvert, Alba describes herself as, determined, intelligent, and compassionate.
Alba has decided to stay with The Downey Legend because she loves the new experiences that the newspaper has brought her such as meeting and interacting with new people. This year, Alba is hoping to make the most of it. “I’m most looking forward to to being able to lead a new talented group of staff members this year.” Alba shared. “I hope to provide them with the opportunities that I was able to experience during my past three years here.”
