Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer released
February 26, 2018
During Super Bowl LII, a teaser trailer for the upcoming Han Solo film was shown during break, with the full trailer being released the following day. The trailer featured Alden Ehrenreich portraying a younger Han Solo as well as fellow actor Donald Glover portraying a younger Lando Calrissian. The film will be the second entry in the Star Wars anthology film following up on 2016’s Rogue One and will be a stand-alone title, telling the story of Solo before the events of the A New Hope, showing his adventures with Chewbacca, including their meeting with Lando Calrissian.
Solo fan and fan of the franchise, Damaris Chacon, 11, is optimistic, yet skeptical about the film and its potential as a Star Wars film to either prove a major hit or be a box-office bomb after seeing the trailer.
“It kind of looks like an action film, when Star Wars is more focused on the characters and development, That is what sets Star Wars apart from most sci-fi films,” Chacon said. “I just hope it shows how Han meets Chewbacca and that it doesn’t mess the story up.”
The trailer and the film itself has some fans in doubt as to whether or not the film is necessary, or if it will live up to the hype it has received or the legacy of Han Solo. Like the previous anthology film, Solo seems to be taking a more darker tone than the main Star Wars series, as it shows his introduction and life as a smuggler in the criminal underworld after apparently being kicked out of an Imperial Flight Academy.
Star Wars fan Daniel Aguilar, 12, is intrigued to see how Lucasfilm will approach Solo’s life before the Death Star and his role as a Rebel General.
“I think it’s interesting that they’re taking this route,” Aguilar said. “We only know him as a smuggler, but not much about how he ended up there or before he met Luke.”
The trailer also showed the addition of new characters to the saga who will interact with and guide a young Han: American actor Woody Harrelson plays Tobias Beckett in the film, a criminal who serves as Han’s mentor and teaches him in the ways of a smuggler. English actress Emilia Clarke, best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in “Game of Thrones,” plays a woman named Qi’ra in the film, Han’s childhood friend and possible love interest for the film.
Bryan Skorka, 11, a Star Wars fan, has some doubts about how the movie will eventually turn out and the response it might get from fans.
“I feel like they are trying to appeal to the newer generation with actors like Donald Glover,” Skorka said. “Depending on how it turns out, I feel like it might be a cash grab at the Star Wars name.”
The film comes out on May 25 this year on the 41st anniversary of the release of A New Hope. While little is known about how the story will progress or what path it will take, one thing is certain: the movie will have to meet the high standards that fans and viewers have set in order to be successful in the franchise.
